2021

2021 stands apart as a year of unpredictability and transformation. While Merlot struggled with mildew, Charmail’s Cabernet-dominant terroir delivered an elegant and refreshing wine with remarkable aromatic precision. A vintage that reminds us of classic Bordeaux charm.

The spring frost spared Charmail’s early-budding vines thanks to the estuary’s moderating influence. But persistent rain favored mildew, severely impacting the Merlot. The remaining grapes ripened slowly, favoring late-ripening varietals. As a result, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot dominate the blend, delivering a structured, elegant profile.

Despite a dry, hot summer, the vineyard remained balanced thanks to Charmail’s well-drained soils and careful vineyard management. Harvested early (September 18 to October 2), the grapes retained acidity and aromatic intensity. Winemaking focused on low-temperature extractions and a blend of ageing vessels, including concrete eggs for layered complexity.

2018

2018 marked the beginning of a trio of solar vintages in Bordeaux. At Charmail, a complex, concentrated wine was born from extreme conditions - torrential spring rains followed by an intensely dry summer. With precision harvesting and gentle extraction, Charmail 2018 is a bold yet balanced wine built to evolve.

The growing season began with challenges: mildew pressure and early summer hail reduced yields. But from July onward, uninterrupted sunshine enabled perfect phenolic maturity. Harvest stretched from September 20 to October 15, with each varietal picked at peak ripeness. A portion of the wine was aged in large-format barrels and concrete eggs, enhancing the wine’s complexity.

The result: a charming, fruit-forward wine with supple tannins and freshness. Balanced, elegant, and immediately pleasing, the 2017 Charmail proves that beauty often emerges from adversity.

Though 2017 brought historic spring frosts and late-summer hail to Bordeaux, Charmail’s terroir was largely untouched. The harvest took place between September 18 and October 2. Cooler conditions helped retain acidity, while ripe Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot contributed structure and roundness. The wine was aged in 225L French oak barrels (33% new) and a small portion in concrete eggs, allowing for both aromatic purity and textural finesse.
